Campus Police Rape Investigations Tier 3: Complex Cases and Multiple Offenders

Campus Police Criminal Investigations Track

Campus Police Rape Investigations Tier 3: Complex Cases and Multiple Offenders

Incapacitation, Digital Evidence, and Multiple-Offender Investigations

Class Description

Complex campus rape cases may involve disputed consent, alcohol- or drug-related incapacitation, limited forensic evidence, digital communications, multiple alleged offenders, and possible patterns of predatory behavior. Detectives must reconstruct events, evaluate competing accounts, and independently assess each suspect’s conduct.

This intermediate course addresses incidents involving residence halls, fraternities, athletic teams, and other student organizations where group dynamics and witness relationships complicate the investigation. Participants examine the distinction between intoxication and legally defined incapacity, the significance of witness observations, and what individuals knew or communicated during an incident.

The course explores investigative follow-up concerning possible grooming, exploitation, repeat offending, and patterns linking allegations without promoting behavioral profiling or assumptions of guilt. Multiple-offender investigations receive focused attention, including sequential conduct, individual criminal liability, potential coordination, group communications, and witness influence.

Participants examine modern digital evidence such as disappearing messages, social media, location information, video, and potentially altered media, along with lawful acquisition, preservation, authentication, and evidentiary limitations. Case scenarios require construction of timelines, identification of corroboration and contradictions, and development of additional leads.
